FANTASTIC CONCEPT!!! Brillantly executed.

Very much brought to mind an invasion ... where these fleshzeps are fragments of a greater entity acting as a "mothership".

again wow

Do you mind explaining why it is tough ? :) I have always had an interest in what makes a professional illustrator and keen to know more about what others do and where.

For my part I am in military, army to be specific.

Hey! Well there's no way in heck I'm going to compare it to the what you guys do in the army, that's for sure LOL!

For business end of it, basically it's very competitive. Because of digital art, there is a plethora of artists out there since computers have made it much easier... you don't have to really learn or master traditional mediums anymore. In addition, because of computers and the internet/global economy, I have to compete for work with overseas artists who are happy to get paid a fraction of what I am willing to work for. Also, there are a few clients that know the value of illustration and are willing to pay a fair wage for it, as well as work together with the artist properly to achieve the desired results. If you are freelance like most illustrators are, there are a lot of ups and downs so you need to be prepared for dry spells by taking as much work as you can when it is available. You have to discipline yourself by budgeting for those dry spells, be on a constant hunt for new work during down time, as well as have the ability to promote yourself in some way in person (conventions) or in the internet.

The technical side of it is way to complicated for me to write, but if you are interested, I'd suggest checking out James Gurney's website... he's been doing it for a long time and knows every aspect of the craft.

firstly i want to clear up a point ... i was not trying to compare what i do to you, not at all! I just thought it fair that since I was asking you about your life I should offer up what I was/do and leaving it up to you if you wanted to know more.

thank you for the honest and decent reply. I was unaware that computers had made such a dramatic change in terms of ease. makes sense why sites like Deviant are so full. so "cheap china" has affected your trade as well, as you say it is the internet/global economy. I would have thought with what you are saying is that more books, especially RPGS, would have a lot more illustrations in them, but then again as you say its all about the profit.

I know a few people who are self-employed and work/worry about the on/off again of their work. also fighting that inner battle of being commercially successful versus being able to do what they want creatively.

thanks for the link ... will check it out

LOL, no I didn't think one bit that you were trying to compare the two! I just found the contrast funny... it almost seems like the complete opposite in that, being a freelance illustrator, there is no structure (other than the deadlines created by the client) and almost too much freedom. I feel like I am making it up along the way sometimes, LOL.
