Kali vs. Rakasha by jubjubjedi Kali vs. Rakasha by jubjubjedi
One of the battles in Roger Zelazny's Lord of Light. Kali, Shiva, Yama and Agni are all hunting down Sam, who, at this point in the novel, has aligned himself with the Rakasha. The Rakasha are former inhabitants of the colonized world in which all these events take place, and have given up their physical forms long ago to become beings of energy. However, they end up longing for physical forms and have thus developed the capacity to posses individuals. Oh, and they love gambling, LOL.

"Taraka, Lord of the Rakasha, is a demon, an energy being. Like the rest of his kind he was bound by Sam in the early days, but he is set free by Sam as part of a bargain to marshal his fellow demons to oppose the Gods."

Quick question: What IS Lord of Light? Now, I can simply just search and find out, but I'm hoping to get some more general info that I might not be able to find. XD

Hey! Well it's an old Science Fiction book written in the late 60's by Roger Zelazny. It won awards and is definitely still in print, so you can find it pretty much anywhere, most especially online bookstores. I guess it's one of the early examples of mixing science fiction and ancient mythology. The setting is basically in the far future where some people have developed 'mutations', not unlike the X-Men, and have styled themselves after ancient Indian deities. Hope that helps, let me know if you want more information!

My friend i trully enjoy these series of art. I think the gods with the steampunk flavor is a very genuine idea! A wonderful new point of view of a classic subject.[link]

Awesome, thanks! It's always great to hear from people who have read the book. I'm gonna be starting "Creatures of Light and Darkness" soon, and maybe do some sketches based on that work.

Nice detail and color scheme as always. I also like the flow although I think Kali's pose feels a little stiff to me. I am not so sure about the design of the Rakasha. According to your story (I take it is from the book you mentioned to me) he doesn't really come off like an energy being to me. Maybe if his shell was more rib like with some kind of energy core peaking through, would also give off a cool lighting source. By the way in real mythology if I remember right the Rakasha is indeed a spirit but one from India personally I would have like to see more influence there but that is just me.

Well in the book, the Rakasha actual have the capability to change forms, just not into anything physical. I figured this way, he looks somewhat "ambiguous". I want to stay away from the whole skeletal/rib like thing as it is way too played out via H.R. Giger. I didn't want to make him too similar too the lead characters because he is of a separate race/culture, as is mentioned in the text above. The visual cues that tie in both characters are the spikiness of their designs, but that's as far as it goes.

"In Roger Zelazny's novel Lord of Light the Rakshasa, there spelled "Rakasha", are a type of extraterrestrial beings consisting of "stable fields of energy". They were present before the arrival of humans on the planet of the novel, and apparently native to it.
The Rakasha were supposedly once material beings, but long ago used unspecified technology to move their atman into energy fields. This gave them immortality, but "born of matter they do ever lust after the flesh" (p. 32). Although it might seem rather foolish of the Rakasha to use highly advanced technology to abandon bodies and then find that they preferred having flesh after all, they have the power to sometimes possess human bodies. Because a mortal who inhabits a body dies with it, unless he transfers his atman into an unused body, while a Rakasha can survive the destruction of its resident body, the Rakasha's choice does give them advantages that not making it would have lacked.
Their natural shape is that of a glowing flame, although they can briefly take nearly any shape they choose to. In their normal shape they are capable of flying, seeing in all directions and surviving most attacks by material weapons (although some compounds can repel them). When inhabiting a human body, they lose the power to fly for unlimited distances and (presumably, as they never do so) to change shape, but gain the ability to enjoy alcohol, good food, and sex.
They seem more amoral than intentionally evil, normally lacking consciences. One of their preferred pastimes is gambling, and gambling debts are the only promises that they can be relied upon to keep. Gambling with Rakasha can lead either to death or great power, as the Rakasha can give powerful gifts but have little desire for other material things than the body of their fellow gambler.
The Rakasha seem to have no clear hierarchy, although they are led by a very old and powerful Rakasha called Taraka. They also control several kinds of lesser energy beings, the only kind explicitly named being the "fire elementals" (note that these resemble mobile thunderbolts more than classical, western fire elementals)."

Cool back story. I think a gambling pic of them would be cool like he just lost a bit to a wise guy being smiling at him smugly or something like that.
